A Moroccan-born knowledge broker forced into a Spanish expedition, who navigated three continents and became one of the most consequential intermediaries of the early Atlantic world. His record is thin — the colonial archive recorded his utility, not his face.

Primary Analysis Essay: Legal Identity and Racial Status Formation
An enslaved woman who sued for her freedom in seventeenth-century Virginia — and won. Her case exposed the legal architecture of racial slavery as it was being built and challenged the emerging equation of African ancestry with bondage.

Primary Analysis Essay: Revolutionary Agency and Gendered Resistance in the Haitian Revolution
A Haitian revolutionary officer who fought alongside Toussaint Louverture’s forces and was executed by the French for refusing to be blindfolded. Her record preserves the voice of a woman who demanded to be seen at the moment of her death.
